Germany NRI Setup Guide 2026: Anmeldung, Banking, Health Insurance & Tax

Step 1: Anmeldung (Registration)

Every person living in Germany must register their address at the local Bürgeramt (citizens' office) — this is called Anmeldung. You must do this within 14 days of moving into a permanent address. Bring your passport, rental contract, and a landlord confirmation form (Wohnungsgeberbestätigung). You'll receive a Meldebescheinigung (registration certificate) — keep this; it's required for almost everything else.

Steuer-ID vs Steuernummer

Your Steuer-ID (tax identification number) is a permanent 11-digit number assigned to everyone registered in Germany — it arrives by post 2–4 weeks after Anmeldung. Your Steuernummer is issued by your local Finanzamt when you first file a tax return or register a business; it changes if you move states. For employment, only the Steuer-ID is needed; your employer will use it for payroll.

Health Insurance: GKV vs PKV

Health insurance is mandatory in Germany. Employees earning below €69,300/year (2026 threshold) must join the public system (GKV — gesetzliche Krankenversicherung), typically TK, AOK, or Barmer. Those earning above can opt for private insurance (PKV). GKV covers your family (spouse + children) at no extra cost; PKV does not. For most Indian IT professionals arriving on Blue Cards, GKV is the default and the safer choice.

Banking in Germany

New arrivals without SCHUFA history should start with N26 (online, accepts foreign ID) or a basic account at Deutsche Bank or Commerzbank. Wise is useful for EUR→INR transfers. After 3–6 months of German banking history, you can apply for a credit card and better products.

SCHUFA Credit Check

SCHUFA is Germany's credit bureau. Landlords and banks use it to assess reliability. As a newcomer, you have no SCHUFA history — which is different from bad SCHUFA. Build it gradually: register a mobile contract, pay bills on time, and use a German credit card responsibly.

Germany–India DTAA

The Indo-German DTAA prevents double taxation on salary income (Article 15), dividends (Article 10 — 10% withholding), and interest (Article 11 — 10% withholding). NRO interest taxed in India at 30% can be credited against German income tax using the Foreign Tax Credit mechanism. File Form 67 on the Indian IT portal before submitting your ITR.

Indian Bank Accounts from Germany

FEMA permits maintaining NRE/NRO accounts while resident in Germany. Remittances to India via Wise, Remitly, or SBI Germany (which has branches in Frankfurt and Munich) are straightforward. Wise typically offers the best rate for EUR→INR; ICICI Money2India is competitive for ICICI NRE deposits.

Blue Card → Permanent Residence

The EU Blue Card requires a German-recognised degree and a salary of at least €43,800/year (€34,106 for shortage occupations in 2026). After 27 months with a Blue Card (or 21 months with B1 German), you can apply for a permanent residence permit. After 5 years, you can apply for German citizenship (reduced to 3 years for exceptional integration).
