UPI for NRIs: How to Use UPI from Abroad with Your International Number (2026)

NRI Tools Editorial2026-03-12

UPI for NRIs — The Game Changer

In 2023, RBI and NPCI (National Payments Corporation of India) enabled NRIs to use UPI with their international mobile numbers. This means if you live in Germany, UAE, USA, or 12 other countries, you can pay in India at any UPI QR code — at your parents' grocery store, at restaurants during your India visits, or for digital subscriptions — without needing an Indian SIM card.

Which Countries Are Supported?

As of 2026, NRI UPI is available for phone numbers from:

  • 🇺🇸 United States (+1)
  • 🇬🇧 United Kingdom (+44)
  • 🇦🇪 UAE (+971)
  • 🇨🇦 Canada (+1)
  • 🇦🇺 Australia (+61)
  • 🇸🇬 Singapore (+65)
  • 🇸🇦 Saudi Arabia (+966)

  • 🇳🇱 Netherlands (+31) — partial support
  • 🇳🇿 New Zealand (+64)
  • 🇲🇾 Malaysia (+60)
  • 🇭🇰 Hong Kong (+852)

Coverage is expanding. Check with your specific Indian bank for the latest supported countries.

Step-by-Step Setup Guide

  1. Open your Indian bank's mobile app — Use the app of your NRE/NRO account bank (e.g., ICICI iMobile Pay, HDFC Bank App, YONO SBI)
  2. Go to UPI / Payments section — Look for "Set UPI PIN", "Register for UPI", or "Payment Services"
  3. Enter your international mobile number — Use your current country number (e.g., +44 7xxx, +971 5xxx, +1 xxx). An OTP is sent to this number
  4. Verify OTP — Enter the OTP received on your international number. Select your NRE or NRO account to link
  5. Set UPI PIN — Use the last 6 digits of your NRE/NRO debit card + expiry date to set the UPI PIN
  6. Create your UPI ID — Your UPI ID (VPA) is generated (e.g., +44XXXXXXXXXX@icici). You can also create a custom ID
  7. Use any UPI app — Once registered, use BHIM, Google Pay, or PhonePe for payments

Transaction Limits for NRI UPI

  • Maximum per transaction: ₹1,00,000 (₹1 lakh)
  • Maximum per day: ₹1,00,000 (varies by bank)
  • Maximum per week: No additional weekly cap beyond daily limits
  • Higher limits (up to ₹5 lakh) available for specific merchant categories (hospitals, insurance) on some banks

UPI Apps That Work for NRIs

  • BHIM (official NPCI app) — Works for NRI UPI with international numbers
  • Google Pay (GPay) — Supported once your NRI UPI account is active; download the Indian version
  • PhonePe — Works with NRI UPI; link through your Indian bank account
  • Paytm — Limited NRI support; primarily for Indian resident phone numbers
  • Your bank's app — Always the most reliable option (iMobile Pay, HDFC Bank App, YONO)

Common Problems and Solutions

  • OTP not received: Ensure your international number has good signal. Try WhatsApp call OTP option if available
  • "This number is already registered": If you had a UPI account on an old Indian number, delink it first from that number via your bank
  • Transaction declined: NRI UPI transactions are sometimes declined by merchant apps that don't support international number VPAs. Try Google Pay or BHIM which have broader acceptance
  • Can't set UPI PIN: Your debit card must be issued and active. Contact bank if card is expired or if you've never activated it

Tip: The Banking Guide on NRI Tools has a dedicated UPI for NRIs section with bank-by-bank setup instructions. Once set up, use UPI from anywhere in the world for your India payments.
