Procedure Guide

Passport Seva — Online (Recommended)

7–10 days

Normal Fee

500

Tatkaal Fee

2,000

Timeline

7–10 working days

Validity

6 months

  1. 1

Visit passportindia.gov.in, log in (or register) and click 'Apply for Police Clearance Certificate'.

  2. 2

Fill the online application: personal details, passport number, and all Indian addresses in the past 10 years.

  3. 3

Pay the fee online — ₹500 (Normal) or ₹2,000 (Tatkaal) — and book an appointment at your nearest Passport Seva Kendra (PSK).

  4. 4

Visit the PSK on your appointment date with all original documents. Biometrics and document verification done on the spot.

  5. 5

Police field verification is conducted at your last Indian address. For NRIs with no current Indian address, verification may be waived or done at a relative's address.

  6. 6

PCC is dispatched to your registered address or collected at the PSK depending on the office. Normal: 7–10 working days; Tatkaal: 3–5 working days.

  • · NRIs currently abroad can apply at the nearest Indian Embassy, Consulate, or VFS Global centre — fee in local currency equivalent. Embassy/VFS processing takes 4–6 weeks (longer than domestic PSK) due to police verification being coordinated from abroad.
  • · If your Indian address has changed since the passport was issued, carry additional address proof.
  • · Tatkaal service is available only if you can show genuine urgency (visa interview, travel within 3 days).

  4. 4

Attach required documents (see below) and pay the prescribed fee at the counter (₹100–₹500 depending on state).

  5. 5

A police officer conducts physical verification at your last Indian address, or at a relative's address if you are abroad.

  6. 6

Collect the PCC from the SP office after verification is complete. Most states take 2–4 weeks. Some states allow postal dispatch.

  • · Some destination countries (Australia, Germany for migration) specifically ask for SP Office PCC alongside the Passport Seva PCC.
  • · If applying from abroad, a POA holder can submit the SP Office application on your behalf in most states.
  • · Keep the acknowledgement receipt — needed to track status and for follow-up.
